Vimeo Launches Store Catering to Independent Filmmakers
Sep 21, 2011
Today marks the beginning of a grand experiment by online video giant Vimeo. With the launch of the Vimeo Music Store, the site hopes to become a “one-stop-shop for finding, discovering and licensing high quality music for your videos.”
Introducing Vimeo Music Store from Andrea Allen on Vimeo.
The store boasts more than 45,000 tracks with three different licensing options for users. All of the store’s free content is provided by the Free Music Archive. All free music is legally available via Creative Commons licensing. Paid music is available via Audiosocket‘s extensive catalog of emerging artists. Customers may purchase these tracks for $1.99 for personal use and $98.00 per track for commercial use.
The Creative Commons licensing was originally intended for its use among the U.S. Legal System–making it easier for lawyers and law students to share information. Since its inception it has grown to encompass a much broader range of uses involving copyright and private law. As of May 2010, there were 52 jurisdiction-specific licenses, with nine others in the drafting process.
Visitors to the Vimeo Music Store are provided a wide range of search criteria. The mission appears to be to simplify the often complicated task of licensing music for videos. Whether this experiment will be a success remains to be seen. Regardless, the implications for filmmakers are intriguing.
With ties to both the video and music industries, World Media Group is interested in the possibilities that online stores such as Vimeo’s present. To learn more about our company and the products and services that we offer, click HERE.
