Educational Videos: Effective Learning Tool and Valuable Business Opportunity
Oct 14, 2011
The life of a parent is never easy. They must constantly seek out new and inventive ways to turn “play time” into educational time. One effective tool that has become increasingly popular among educators and parents alike is the use of educational videos. Research indicates, both at home and in the classroom, that videos are an effective learning tool for children of all ages.
The Journal of Children and Media released a 2010 study on the transfer of learning from videos to books in toddlers. The study was conducted at the University of Texas, Austin by two of the leading scientists in the field of children’s media studies. Results found that toddlers were able to learn novel shapes and words from video and then transfer the knowledge to a different context.

This comes as no surprise, as educational videos have remained a thriving business opportunity since the advent of programs like Sesame Street and School House Rock!. A 2004 study on “The U.S. Market for Children’s Video Products” found that children’s video or “kidvid,” is a $4.8 billion market. The study states: “Not only are kids aware of every entertainment trend, they have more spending power – and have more spent on them – than any previous generation.”
Companies like Disney, Nickelodeon, and PBS have long understood the brand value that comes with the children’s video market. However, there is always room for growth.
